Justice Kanyeihamba’s Rulings are a Treasure for Generations – Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Prof. George Kanyeihamba, describing him as a treasure in Uganda’s legal fraternity.

Museveni’s remarks on Kanyeihamba were read by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, during Kanyeihamba’s requiem mass at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero, Kampala, on Monday.

In his message, Museveni said that Kanyeihamba’s writings and landmark rulings will remain a treasure for present and future generations.

“He excelled as a lawyer, a scholar, and a judge. His writings and landmark rulings over the years are a great treasure to the present and future generations,” said Baryomunsi as he read Museveni’s message. Kanyeihamba was initially a great ally of President Yoweri Museveni. However, at the time of his death, he had become one of Museveni’s harshest critics. By the time of his passing, Kanyeihamba had turned into a vocal and staunch supporter of Museveni’s fiercest political rival, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, aka Bobi Wine.

Kanyeihamba accused Museveni of undermining the constitution and the rule of law. However, Museveni saluted the former Supreme Court Justice’s contribution during the 1981-86 bush war, which brought Museveni to power.

During the five-year war, Kanyeihamba was part of the National Resistance Army’s (NRA) external committee that was mobilizing support in the diaspora.

When the NRA captured power, he served in the government as a minister, and at one time he represented the Rubanda constituency in the Parliament. “We are not only mourning the death of Professor Kanyeihamba, but we are also celebrating his great legacy, which must be carried forward by his children, grandchildren, and his former students and admirers,” Museveni said.

Museveni authorized a state funeral for the late Supreme Court Justice. He eulogized Prof. Kanyeihamba with Shs 10 million, which Baryomunsi handed to his family.
