Kamuli: Husband of Woman MP Aspirant Shot Dead in Armed NRM Primaries Clash

Kamuli, Uganda | Sowedi Egumbye, the husband of Buzaaya Woman MP aspirant Sarah Auma and the alleged ringleader of the infamous Nawanyago-based “fake dollar gang,” was fatally shot by police during a violent confrontation in Kamuli District late Wednesday night.
The clash, linked to the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, has raised serious concerns about the growing infiltration of criminal elements into local political contests.
Authorities confirmed that the incident occurred around 11:00 pm on July 16, when a group allegedly affiliated with Auma’s campaign launched a violent incursion into the home of incumbent Buzaaya County MP Martin Muzaale. According to police, the group—travelling in a convoy—rammed one of their vehicles through the legislator’s gate, triggering a police response after an emergency alert was issued.
Police say they arrived to find the suspects attempting to flee the scene. In an attempt to stop them, officers fired at the tyres of the fleeing vehicle. Egumbye, one of the occupants, was hit during the gunfire and later pronounced dead at Kamuli General Hospital.
Security operatives recovered pangas, hammers, and other crude weapons from the site. Several individuals were arrested, many of whom, according to preliminary investigations, were not local residents.
Police suspect they had been ferried into the area to interfere with the primaries—an act prohibited under Uganda’s electoral laws.
The police further noted that the operation occurred well outside the official campaign window, which forbids political activities beyond prescribed hours.
“This points to deliberate efforts to manipulate the primaries through violence and voter importation,” one senior officer stated on condition of anonymity.
Egumbye, who had previously been arrested in 2024 for operating a counterfeit US dollar ring in the Busoga sub-region, was believed to be out on bond or released under unclear circumstances.
His return to the political fray, allegedly as a violent enforcer, has deepened public concern over the criminalization of politics.
Sarah Auma, who had not issued a formal statement by press time, was recently involved in a separate traffic accident along the Kamuli–Jinja highway and is reportedly still recovering.
The incident has intensified scrutiny of the NRM’s internal election processes, with citizens and political observers alike calling for tighter enforcement of party regulations and national electoral laws.
Party officials have yet to comment on the matter, but the Uganda Police Force has pledged a thorough investigation into both the death and the broader circumstances surrounding the violent attack
